Excerpts from - A Prophetic Statement by Seventy Neil Simmons at the Geneseo
Reunion, July 2006
The God of thy Fathers speaks to you today, as he has spoken in times past-the God of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob-the God of Joseph. As I live saith the God of Israel, all of my promises to you are confirmed to you again in your hearing that my Zion shall yet be upon the earth, and the gospel of the Kingdom shall not fail but be preached into all the world and as a witness to the earth's people, kindred, tongues, tribes and nations. The powers of darkness continue to grow causing the perplexity among the nations of this earth. Your salvation cometh from above, and not from among mankind. Restore your confidence in Me. Know that I have neither forsaken you nor My Church, but trust Me to care for what is Mine. My church must also be resurrected to be clothed without spot or blemish in the raiment of righteousness, therefore all who grieve for my church be of good comfort. For yet a little while and I shall sound the trumpet-and She shall arise, be ye ready my servants to clothe her in the raiment of the wedding garment (be ye clean in all things). Make your path therefore the straight and the narrow path that leads to life. Turn away from Babylon and the broad ways that lead to destruction. Oh my children, you must choose this day whom ye will serve-whether it be the gods of the land, or the God of Israel. Choose either the things of this earth-or the God of the New Heaven and Earth. But know and understand that you cannot have both. The wars and rumors of wars, the death and the destruction in the world, are revealing the condemnation of the world. The disturbances in nature reveal the Day of Judgment is come. …the day of …visitation is near to hand. Be prepared unto that day and faint not, but continue with steadfast effort. Many of my youth are deeply marked with the things of the world, in speech, in dress, and even in those permanent marks on your bodies which have identified you with the world. Know and understand that the world does not endure, and the day cometh speedily when like a flower that fades away, the things of this world shall perish. I require more from you than other young people. You are children of the King of Heaven and Earth and your allegiance must be to Him. If you first seek my Kingdom, remember that all needful things shall be given to you. You should be marked in your spirit with the emblems and ordinances of my Kingdom. My children, keep your covenants with me, and I have given my word that I shall fulfill every promise of my scriptures. Amen. From December 16, 1811 through February 7, 1812, a total of five catastrophic earthquakes of a magnitude of 8.o or higher on the Richter Scale, occurred in southern Missouri, causing permanent changes in the course of the Missouri River, (which flowed backward temporarily), and were felt as far away as New York City and Boston, Massachusetts where church bells rang. Large areas sank into the earth. Fissures opened. Lakes were permanently drained, new lakes were formed and 150,000 acres of Forests were destroyed. Many houses at New Madrid were thrown down. "Houses, gardens, and fields were swallowed up". However, fatalities and damage were low, because the area was sparsely settled and populated at the time. The outcome is what we see today, the rolling hills of the Ozark Mountains with its beautiful trees, streams, lakes and underground caverns and caves, which hundreds of thousands of people from around the world enjoy each year. However, there is a lurking danger underground …On average there are still 13 quakes per day with one earthquake per year large enough to be felt in the entire area. The fault, known as the "New Madrid", includes parts of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi, and Arkansas. One of the major fault lines runs from New Madrid, to St. Louis, across the state to St. Joseph, Missouri. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, "Strong earthquakes in the New Madrid seismic zone are certain to occur in the near future." There is a 9-in-10 chance of a magnitude 6 to 7 quake occurring in the New Madrid seismic zone within the next 20 to 40 years." The prediction is that hundreds of thousands will be killed or injured and hundreds of thousands more left without food, water, shelter or transportation. Last year Bonnie and I took an eight week course sponsored by FEMA called CERT training. Community Emergency Response Team - This is a program that educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, search and rescue missions, emergency response team organization, and disaster medical procedures and operations. In spite of all the problems we face with international and national terrorism, civil crime and disorder, drive-by shootings and gang warfare, meth-labs, fires, floods, and tornados, …a major earthquake resulting from the New Madrid fault, that would seriously affect the greater Kansas City metropolitan area, including Blue Springs and Independence, was the number one concern. With this fault estimated to be at least 40 to 50 years overdue for another major ground shift …FEMA and the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program is trying very hard to prepare the Greater Kansas City Area to be ready to respond when this inevitable disaster occurs. However, they have a major problem…No one is listening to the warnings… Most of the people are unaware, uninformed and don't really care. Even the local emergency rescue people - the people who are supposed to be in charge of our safety and protection, [fire - police - emergency 911 - etc.], they don't really care or believe the predictions from the experts. So how is the overall response to this major imminent threat - haphazard at best! Most of the population in our area does not know what is happening right under their feet - and if told - could care less. If they are Christian and hear about the problem - The response is …What do you expect me to do? - Our leaders will take care of it - Our God will take care of us! In 1830 another major "spiritual earthquake" not only hit the United States, but the effect of this quake has been felt around the world ever since. Even today, after shocks of this spiritual quake are affecting the lives of many. Of course this "spiritual earthquake" was the restoration of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Holy Priesthood to the earth, which opened the doors for the Holy Spirit to begin gathering the House of Israel in preparation for the return of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And the Lord said unto Enoch, As I live, even so will I come in the last days--in the days of wickedness and vengeance, to fulfill the oath which I made unto you, concerning the children of Noah: and the day shall come that the earth shall rest, but before that day, shall the heavens be darkened, and a veil of darkness shall cover the earth; and the heavens shall shake, and also the earth; and great tribulations shall be among the children of men, but my people will I preserve; and righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth, to bear testimony of my Only Begotten; His resurrection from the dead; yea, and also the resurrection of all men; and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather out my own elect from the four quarters of the earth unto a place which I shall prepare; a holy city, that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, a New Jerusalem. And the Lord said unto Enoch, Then shall you and all your city meet them there, and we will receive them into our bosom, and they shall see us, and we will fall upon their necks, and they shall fall upon our necks, and we will kiss each other, and there shall be my abode, and it shall be Zion which shall come forth out of all the creations which I have made; and for the space of a thousand years shall the earth rest. And it came to pass that Enoch saw the days of the coming of the Son of man, in the last days, to dwell on the earth in righteousness, for the space of a thousand years. But before that day he saw great tribulations among the wicked; and he also saw the sea, that it was troubled, and men's hearts failing them, looking forth with fear for the judgments of the Almighty God, which should come upon the wicked. [Sec 36:12c-14a] The 1830 spiritual earthquake has left us with a major problem…Just as our professional leaders and the people have responded to the New Madrid fault and the imminent possibility of a major quake, most of our peoples' response to the gospel message of 1830 has been - haphazard at best. Our people are unaware, uninformed and don't really believe that Jesus Christ is returning to the earth in our Generation. Even the local emergency rescue people - the Holy Priesthood - the ones who are to watch, to warn and to protect us, don't really care. Where are the quorum organizations of Priests, Teachers and Deacons? Where is the priesthood who are to visit every home, and teach us to pray and to attend to all family duties? Where are the Elders and High Priests who are to warn us and help us put on the wedding garment? Where is the priesthood who is to help us get ready for the Bridegroom? So here we are - looking at two great earthquakes - One a physical, temporal earthquake with faults and fissures, movements and quakes and an earthquake ready to erupt with a great eruption that will probably shake the entire nation. The second is a spiritual earthquake with all its faults and fissures, movements and quakes; and it is also about to erupt with a great and mighty eruption that will change the entire physical, political, governmental, social, economic and spiritual structure of the entire earth. Are we ready for either or both? I don't think so! Can you say that you have sufficient oil in your lamp? Can you say with certainty that you have on a pure white and clean wedding garment? Can we say together - today - that we are ready for the great wedding feast that is certain to come? In past centuries-the world-view or established conservative religious view of our daily life was an important and major part of American life and was supported by most of the daily activities surrounding it. There was no need even to speak of "living a good and righteous life" as a separate thing-you lived conventional religious values in harmony with the family and friends and the society around you, and you had a conventional world-view provided by home, by the church and by society as a whole. The government itself confessed this fundamental religious view and it was the center of public functions and was historically an example to all its citizens. Every city had conventional churches, with most having Sunday morning and evening services. Some even had services every day, morning and evening. There were many churches in most cities, small or large and in the countryside and even in the deserts and wildernesses you could find small local churches. Most families, in fact, had a brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin or someone who was a preacher and a "fool for Christ". The whole way of life was permeated with conventional kinds of Christian people, whose church was the center of their social life. Christian customs were a part of daily life. Most books that were commonly read were Christian. Daily life itself was difficult for most people: they had to work hard to survive, life expectancy was not very long, death was a frequent reality-all of which reinforced the Church's teaching on the reality and nearness of the next world. Living a Christian life in such circumstances was really the same thing as having a Christian world-view, and there was little need to talk of any other world-view. Today, on the other hand, all this has changed. The true fundamental gospel of Jesus Christ has become a "right-wing radical cult" a little island in the midst of a world which operates on totally different principles. Every day these principles are changing for the worse, making us more and more alienated from the true gospel of Jesus Christ. Cracks and fissures are growing exponentially in the spiritual fabric of the church and therefore in our daily spiritual lives. The earthquake is coming! Our own people, for the most part, have divided their lives into two sharply distinct categories:
The world-view of such a person, if you look closely, is a strange combination of some Latter Day Saint values mixed with worldly values. The two really do not mix, although most of us try hard to mix the two. But being a "true Latter Day Saint" requires a "peculiar life style". With no mixing! If we don't live a "peculiar Latter Day Saint" life style, we simply are not a "true Latter Day Saint", no matter what formal beliefs we expound. No matter how often we attend church or how much we do "church work", living a Christian life in our contemporary world has for the most part become artificial, uncertain, and confusing. Most of us cannot even say the name of our church. We become embarrassed, mortified or even humiliated if someone would even suggest that we are a member of "the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints". True Latter Day Saints do have a life style of their own, but that life style for most is not very far from the life styles of the world around us. Christians and non-Christians alike really cannot see any difference. The life of a Latter Day Saint, even when trying to be as true as possible to the fullness of the gospel, can hardly help but reflect the conventional society that surrounds us. Life today has become "abnormal". However, in the historical sense, the abnormal is now the norm. Anyone who looks at our contemporary life from the perspective of the normal life lived by saints even just 50 years ago, cannot help but be struck by the fact of how abnormal life has become today. Wo unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Wo unto the wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Wo unto the mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink: Who justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! Therefore, as the fire devoureth the stubble and the flame consumeth the chaff, their root shall be rottenness, and their blossoms shall go up as dust; because they have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel. Therefore, is the anger of the Lord kindled against his people, and he hath stretched forth his hand against them, and hath smitten them: and the hills did tremble, and their carcasses were torn in the midst of the streets. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand stretched out still. And he will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth; and behold, they shall come with speed swiftly: [2 Nephi 8:90-96] The Spiritual Earthquake is coming! The Lord will return! The whole concept of authority and obedience, of decency and politeness, of public and private behavior-all have changed drastically. Saints come to church today dressed in worldly clothes - chomping gum - bringing in drinks - children get up and walk out during the services - teenagers and adults alike stand - but refuse to sing the hymns - and on and on it goes. Everything has been turned upside down except in a few isolated pockets of people-usually Christians of some kind-who try to preserve the so-called "old-fashioned" way of life. Our abnormal life today can only be characterized as a "spoiled & pampered generation". From infancy today's child is treated, as a general rule, like a little god or goddess in the family: his whims are catered to, his desires fulfilled; he is surrounded by toys, amusements, electronic games and gadgets, cell-phones and computers, radios and TVs, all manner of comforts and pleasures; he eats and drinks what he wants, when he wants; he sees and listens to what he wants, when he wants; he is not trained and/or brought up according to strict principles of disciplined Christian behavior, but is left to develop whichever way his desires incline. All this child needs to say is, "I want it!" or "I won't do it!" for his obliging parents to bow down before him, give him the demanded money and let him have his way. Parents live in fear of their own children. Dr. James Dobson recently said, "A life that is over stimulated with comforts and pleasures or lived by excessive demands can easily turn children into adrenaline addicts who constantly need higher and higher levels of stimulation to be happy. And as for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they who lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. [Isaiah 3:12] Now I, the Lord, am not well pleased with the inhabitants of Zion, for there are idlers among them: and their children are also growing up in wickedness; they also seek not earnestly the riches of eternity, but their eyes are full of greediness. These things ought not to be, and must be done away from among them; [Sec 68:4f-g] Many of my youth are deeply marked with the things of the world, in speech, in dress, and even in those permanent marks on your bodies which have identified you with the world. Know and understand that the world does not endure, and the day cometh speedily when like a flower that fades away, the things of this world shall perish. [Neil Simmons' Message] Of course this is not happening all the time in every family, but it is happening often enough to be the "rule of contemporary childrearing", within the church, and even the best-intentioned parents can hardly escape this worldly influence. The earthquake is shaking their homes. I have sworn in my wrath and decreed wars upon the face of the earth, and the wicked shall slay the wicked, and fear shall come upon every man, and the Saints also shall hardly escape; [Sec 63:9b] The gravitational pull of this Spiritual Earthquake has already captured too many of our people. O that ye would awake; awake from this deep sleep, yea, even from the sleep of hell, and shake off the awful chains by which ye are bound, which are the chains which bind the children of men, that they are carried away captive down to the eternal gulf of misery and wo! The devil cheateth your souls, and leadeth you away carefully down to hell. He flattereth away, and telleth you there is no hell; and he saith unto you, I am no devil, for there is none: And thus he whispereth in your ears, until he grasps you with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance. [2 Nephi 1:27-28] When there are parents who try to raise their children strictly, according to scriptural requirements - fellow church members, family, neighbors, friends and even some of the priesthood pulls them back. They put on the pressure for the parent to back off, let them alone, they are just being kids, and on and on it goes - the justifications for bad behavior. The conscientious parent then has to take into consideration the wrath spewed out from others when they discipline their own child. They are forced to decide if and when they can even bring their children to church, or let them go to camps and reunions with undisciplined parents and undisciplined children. When the undisciplined child becomes an adult, he naturally surrounds himself with the same things he was used to in his childhood: comforts, pleasures, amusements, sex before marriage - grown-up toys and "it's my way or the highway" - The results are - divorce, abandoned children, the love of many waxed cold. Life has become a constant search for "fun" which, by the way, is a word totally unheard of in most countries and in other languages. The 19th, 20th and even the 21st century civilizations around the world, would not have understood what was meant by the word "fun". "Fun" was just not and is not a part of their vocabulary. On the other hand, life in the U.S. has become a constant search for "fun" and pleasure, even at church. This life style is so empty of any serious meaning, that visitors from other countries, looking at our popular television programs, amusement parks, advertisements, movies, music-at almost any aspect of our popular culture-would think they had stumbled across a land of imbeciles who have lost all contact with reality. Recent visitors to our Joint Conference of Branches - from Africa, after traveling around our city, jokingly said, "It looks like we are going to have to send our missionaries here to teach you the fullness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and show you how to live it". Other observers of our contemporary life style have called us the, "MTV Generation" the "me generation" or the "age of narcissism". Narcissism is characterized by a "worship of self", self-centeredness, or a fascination with oneself that prevents a normal human social life from developing; no life long lasting friends, in and out of marriages, depression, and suicide. You may think I am just speaking to our youth. I am not just speaking or referring to our young people. This love of self started back as far as the 1920s and has grown and grown ever since. Who I am really speaking to - is me - us - the parents and the grandparents, the adults of today, those of us who are raising our children, and raising them without standards and without discipline. For what we - the parents have allowed in moderation - our children are excusing to excess. Who do you think it is, that has taught our children, that living for fun and pleasure, that piercing and tattooing and bad language, sex before marriage, living together, homosexuality - is at least tolerable - if not out-right expectable? How can our children be expected to live "disciplined Christian lives" when they are being raised by pleasure seeking adults who have not and are not living a "disciplined Christian life" themselves? How is it possible that our children are expected to walk the narrow path when their parents and grandparents do not have "oil in their lamps" and who have not and will not "put on the wedding garment"? …because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. [Matthew 24:10] Iniquity is the foundation of self-love which leads to total destruction of the soul. Our children are not learning to love each other and serve each other because we, their parents, have not learned to love each other and/or to serve each other. A quick simple look at the divorce rate among our members only serves to bring to you the truthfulness of this conclusion. …ye will not suffer your children, that they go hungry, or naked; Neither will ye suffer that they transgress the laws of God, and fight and quarrel one with another, and serve the devil, who is the master of sin, or who is the evil spirit which hath been spoken of by our fathers; he being an enemy to all righteousness; But ye will teach them to walk in the ways of truth and soberness; ye will teach them to love one another, and to serve one another; [Mosiah 2:25-27] We live in a plastic, artificial universe or fantasy world, unable to face or come to terms with the reality of the world around us or the problems within ourselves. We look to the government or the church to fix our problems when we "mess up". The ground is shaking underneath our feet, but because the quakes are so common, we can't even feel, see, hear or understand what is going on. We have eyes and cannot see; we have ears and cannot hear. Too many of our members live in a depressed or anxious state of mind, seeking counsel from psychiatrists and therapists, who suppress their intellect with drugs, psycho-babble and hypnotic suggestions, causing them to walk around as zombies in some kind of fogged out unreal world. They cannot get through the day or night without the next round of pills. When our "me generation" does turn to religion-which has been happening frequently over the past several years-it has been to a plastic, artificial or fantasy form of religion: a religion of self- enlightenment, self-development, self-improvement, self-help (where self remains the object of worship) and a pursuit of abnormal spiritualism and a euphoric state of emotions and feelings which becomes the norm. We come to church to be entertained, to feel good, to have fun, to please the feelings and emotions; - anything else becomes boring and unexciting. Our youth, by the time they are teenagers say, "I don't want to go to church - prayer meetings - it's boring!" We don't want to come to a service or a religion demanding REPENTANCE. No - Not Repentance - Justification. This message of universal justification that attacks men today-quite openly in its secular forms is hidden in its religious forms. You won't hear from the pulpit…"Live for the present, enjoy yourself, relax, be comfortable - have fun - exchange marriage partners." No - What you will hear is much more subtle - "There's no earthquake threat - there's no rumbling under your feet - there's no emanate return of Jesus Christ. God loves you - He loves your children - you have nothing to repent of, you're a good person - you're doing fine. The tattoos, the piercing, homosexuality, pre-marital sex - living together - bad language - worldly dress - God will turn his eye - the priesthood will turn their eyes - and we will all enter the Kingdom of God together." And in that day shall be heard of wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth shall be in commotion, and men's hearts shall fail them, and they shall say that Christ delayeth his coming until the end of the earth. [Sec 45:4a] For behold, at that day, Satan shall rage in the hearts of the children of men, and stir them up to anger against that which is good; And others will he pacify, and lull them away into carnal security, that they will say, All is well in Zion; yea, Zion prospereth, all is well; And thus the devil cheateth their souls, and leadeth them away carefully down to hell. And behold, others he flattereth away, and telleth them there is no hell; and he saith unto them, I am no devil, for there is none: And thus he whispereth in their ears, until he grasps them with his awful chains, from whence there is no deliverance. Yea, they are grasped with death and hell; and death, and hell, and the devil, and all that have been seized therewith, must stand before the throne of God and be judged according to their works, from whence they must go into the place prepared for them, even a lake of fire and brimstone, which is endless torment. Therefore, wo be unto him that is at ease in Zion. [2 Nephi 12:24-30] So how do we change this worldly lifestyle? First, we must be humble enough to see what we are, who we are and what we have become. We must admit that we, as adults, are the ones who need to repent and to change. We need to quit blaming our children for their behavior, especially our teenagers, because we are the ones who have been the undisciplined generation and have taught our children to be selfish and unloving. We adults are the generation of fornication, adultery and divorce; not our children. Secondly, we must realize that we do not have much time to make the changes necessary to obtain immortality and eternal life for ourselves and we have very little time to repent to and help correct the behavior of our children. In 1972 at a young adult retreat of about 35 or 40 young couples, we were spoken to through the gift of tongues and the interpretation of tongues. This was done through two Patriarchs. We were told four things that God was not pleased with:
Then we were told a very, very amazing thing: That if we would discipline ourselves and keep God's commandments, many of us in that room would live on earth to see Christ come in his fullness and we would live to see Zion fully established on the earth. However, we are still facing the same problem we were facing then… First - The most common way of dealing with today's world -is simply to go along with things and adapt: adapt yourself to rock music, modern fashions and tastes, cuttings, tattoos and piercings, filthy language and lyrics, ill manners and bad behavior, fornications, and/or living together. Don't risk offending anyone; especially our children - just "go with the flow" - with the whole rhythm of our "jazzed-up" modern life. Just drink one of those new power drinks - "The Feel Good Drinks" And GET OVER IT! Secondly - If we are trying to live the "straight and narrow life" - just have as little contact as possible with the "abnormal" and live our own life more or less separately, in our own little world. Smile at our children, let them know we love them, don't offend them or cause them any guilt feelings, let them go after the latest craze; tell them it's just a phase they are going through and think in terms that it is harmless, they will grow out of it and grow up, in other words, just leave them alone. Send them out in a powerful new car - to a PG-13 or R rated movie, tell not to stay out too late - and have fun! This path, of course, is total disaster - total disaster for our children - for their children - for our Church - and for our nation. It is complete death to the souls of men. Satan loves it. Satan glories in it. Some who take this path still lead an outwardly respectable life without struggling against the spirit of the times. Inwardly they are dead or dying. They feel guilty inside because they know they have not stepped up to the plate and challenged the evil that is growing right in their own homes. The saddest thing of all-our children are paying the price in various psychic, physical and spiritual disorders and sicknesses which have become more and more common in recent years and they get the blame for "being bad" for "being rebellious". We and our children have blended in with the anti-Christian world around us and we bring the mix right into our Church. We cease to be examples of any kind of Christianity for those around us. Our children have taken the lead from us, their parents. Don't stand out. Don't rock the boat. Don't be different. Blend in - God loves you - God love the peacemakers. Saints - There are two earthquakes coming and this generation is not prepared to meet either one of them. The earthquakes are both temporal and spiritual. They are rumbling every day and are ready to explode upon the scene. They have fissures and cracks reaching out into every aspect of our lives and we must become aware of and informed as to what is going on right under our feet or we will not be ready! "The disturbances in nature reveal the day of Judgment "IS COME" [message Neil Simmons] Latter Day Saints must be different from the Christians in the world we see around us and we must be completely different from the secular world. We must live above today's weird, abnormal world and this must be one of the basic tenants we teach our children. I am a peculiar person for Jesus Christ - I am different from the world and I know why - I choose to be different from the world, even the world of Christianity. If we can't do this, there is no point in calling ourselves Latter Day Saints! Why spend the time and effort defending "the Restoration Gospel" if we don't live any different from the world? - from the ordinary Christian world? Saints, we are admonished to… walk uprightly before the Lord…, considering the end of your salvation, and do all things with prayer and thanksgiving, that ye may not be seduced by evil spirits, or doctrines of devils, or the commandments of men, for some are of men, and others of devils. … beware, lest ye are deceived, and that ye may not be deceived, seek earnestly the best gifts, always remembering for what they are given; for verily I say unto you, They are given for the benefit of those who love me and keep all my commandments… [Sec 46:3c-4b] God has given us a little more time - time to prune our own vineyard. He is giving us a little more time - time to nourish our trees and to be prepared for the day of his visitation. The earthquakes are coming that will shake both heaven and earth - they are imminent. Can't we work together and get ourselves ready? Can't we work together to help each other get the required "oil in our lamps" - to put on the beautiful wedding garment? Let's do it! May God bless us as we work out our repentance! Amen |
